A Short List of Alternative Work

Many of us need to expand our views on entrepreneurship beyond creating a small shop or manufacturing a new product, which can be intimidating. There are many, many new alternatives to traditional office work and earning income.

Here’s a short list of careers or money-making options from the top of my head. We’ll go over some of them in more detail in future posts. Note: a chunk of these I have had personal experience with and can be done at home. But be clear, all require hard work, smarts and knowledge of cashflow and selling yourself.

  • Professional Freelance Writing and Designing (print/web).
  • General buying and selling or earning commissions through sales (cars, gadgets, real estate etc.)
  • Online Selling (check ebay and other online shopping websites)
  • Business consultancy
  • Blogging and Internet Marketing. Check CarlOcab’s free ebook .
  • Stocks, now made easier through firstmetrosec.com.ph and citiseconline.com.
  • Service referral or earning commissions for referring a client to a company or freelancer.
  • Product development - proposing ideas to manufacturers .
  • Apprenticing to an established businessman (their knowledge is the best payment). Fastest way to find one is to ask your parents about their old friends.
  • Tutoring not just kids but adults (Ex: teach about Internet researching).

As you gloss over the list or see the related links, come up with your other ideas, get to know your skills, and focus on creating value for other people which as Tony Robbins and many experts have said to be the only real way to earn money.

Some more notes: Never limit yourself to working alone - which has been a major pitfall for countless freelancers. You can always learn more by working with other people. Never hastily quit your job; you can do many things while you are still in your present career. Never invest in something you do not understand. Always think things through and always have a backup plan. Learn to focus on one thing at a time. Come up with a general direction of what profession you really want to be in or else you may end up just as a dabbler.

If you have ideas you want to share, go ahead and comment. :)
